Here are the results for last weekend for Brunswick Cricket Club. Some wins, some draws, some losses, and some matches still in progress. It's all happening...
Firsts 190 v Plenty Valley 8/95
On losing the toss we were sent in to bat. We were able to get away to a strong & enterprising start with SOS (69) & Coops (32) putting on 49 before Coops was run out. 2/57 when Rowdy (3) left in an unlucky decision. Hilly (37) joined SOS & were very much on top of the attack until Hilly was caught just before tea 3/129. Marcus (13), B Mossy (0), Lewis (6) & Doz (5) saw us lose 5/47 to be 8/176. When SOS, who was exceptional in his application, Louis (7) & Dan (12) were all dismissed, we were all out for 190. Losing 8/61 meant we were unable to capitalise on a very strong start, however the wicket still had a bit of help in it for the bowlers, so 190 was going to be challenging for PV.
With 10 overs to bowl till stumps early inroads were required & achieved, with Dan doing damage rattling the stumps twice including on the final ball of the day – 2/28. What greeted us on Sunday morning as we continued to digest our Weet Bix was a ground that had become waterlogged with heavy overnight rain. A fantastic effort by everyone saw the ground returned to a reasonable playing surface. With play commencing @ 3pm we had 45 overs to get 8 wickets. Our effort started brilliantly as Dan rattled the stumps at the start of the 3rd over – 3/32. Doz followed this up with SOS taking a brilliant catch in slips. 4/39 quickly became 5/42 then 6/42 as Dan was on his second hatrick for the day. A partnership followed until Doz got the job done trapping Ali in front for 26. 7/78. This soon became 8/80 as Doz grabbed another, caught in close by Hilly as we continued to crowd the batsmen & apply the pressure. Despite some brilliant bowling from Dan (5/33), Doz (3/25), Louis (0/20) & J Mossy (0/9), we ran out of time & the game ended in a draw.
What should not be underestimated here is that we could quite easily have packed up and gone home early such were the conditions. However, the leadership of Hilly & the preparedness of EVERYONE (including a number of our committee ) to do their bit made sure we were able to get day 2 away & give ourselves a chance to maximise the points on offer.
Attitude & positivity will get you a long way in whatever you do. Hilly’s leadership was once again to the fore & the effort from all 11 players was something the club should be proud of.
Also a big thanks to all of the committee & supporters involved who helped. If I mention names I will invariably miss someone, so I won’t, however your efforts & support are truly appreciated.

Saturday B 176 V Reds 1 – 9/231
We won the toss and bowled first on a new spongy green deck. Chris O picked up their skipper early. An aggressive partnership took the Reds to 1/50, before a crafty fumble and a good throw from Chris West saw the end of the other opener. Chris O took another when Evan Nolte dived full length at cover to take the catch of the season. Their #3 continued to swing hard a couple of times per over, usually missing one but sending the other to the boundary. Evan struck him on the foot in front of the stumps but our strong appeal was unrewarded. We spread the field to get him off strike and were able to keep it tight at the other end. Good spells from Akhil (1/35) and Aiden (1/38) stemmed the run rate through the middle overs. When Chris O finally got the #3 for 108 (105), and Baljeet and Gareth produced another couple of run outs, we looked set to bowl them out for around 200. But a late flurry from their tail saw them finish at 9/231. Chris O finished with 4/37 and 5 fines for jaywalking on Bell St to retrieve the ball.
In reply, after a quiet first few overs, we lost Sid, Baljeet, the captain and Jezza in quick succession to be 4/30. Boothy and Westy started to turn the tide, but a bowling change had immediate success with Westy misjudging the pace of a long hop and spooning it to mid off. Boothy (74) played a fine counter-attacking innings, but couldn't find a partner to stick with him for long enough to change the course of the game. Aiden (16), Evan (15) and Chris O (10no) gave the score some respectability at the end, but we still fell 55 short.
The Reds look like one of the strongest teams in the grade. While we were beaten on the day, we are confident that, with some improvement with both bat and ball, we can compete strongly with them next time.
Saturday D 9/158 v Flemington 2 - 7/219
Brunswick won the toss and sent Flemington in to bat in a rain shortened one-day match in Ascot Vale. Flemington started strongly with a 92 run opening partnership before Manuda Koku Hennedige (2/31) made the breakthrough before the drinks break. Shaik Hemad Faisal (1/44) claimed the 2nd wicket cheaply with a nice catch behind the stumps from Kiran Long, before Manuda dispatched Flemington's 2nd opener with a good catch from Jack Nolte. Chris Pratt (2/54) ripped through the middle order with a sharp caught and bowled off a mishit full-toss. Opening bowlers Bryce Sarah (1/33) and Archie Liddell (1/47) returned for some tight bowling in the final overs, but a cameo from Flemington's number 7 batsman saw them finish their 35 overs on 7/219.
After a couple of early wickets, Waqas Jatoi (35) picked up the run rate to well above the required mark with 3 sixes and a four, but a middle order collapse of 4/18 saw Brunswick at a precarious 6/83. Solid contributions from Kiran (38*), Shaik (27), and some great defence from Archie (3* from 30) saw Brunswick bat out the 35 overs, but ultimately fell 61 runs short at 9/158.
