With the Subbies teams completing their 2-day games and the MCA, Women’s and All abilities teams playing one-dayers, here are a swag of match reports from last weekend. In total Brunswick had 7 wins, 2 losses and a tie from the 10 games - a great weekend of cricket!
Womens T20
On Sunday the Brunswick women's team played the Pascoe Vale Hadfield Panthers at James Martin Reserve. We were pleased to welcome first time player, Lara Killham Walter to the team.
Rosie won the toss and elected to bat. It was a slow start for Brunswick, but they soon settled into a rhythm, with solid performances from Rosie Rodger (15 no), Indi Rodger (17 no) and Poppy Dohrman (9 no). Isabella Edwards was the stand out batter on the day hitting 4 boundaries on her way to 34 runs, not out, from 32 deliveries. Brunswick ended their innings on 4/106.
The Brunswick women were tight in the field and bowled well, but the Panthers had a team of big hitters who smashed their way to a total of 2/145 with 14 fours and 2 sixes. There was one assisted run out from Indi and Rosie Rodger and one wicket to Alannah Sander on the final ball.
Despite the loss, the Panthers were great opponents; fair and fun and full of encouragement.
Firsts V Preston
On winning the toss Hilly elected to bat on a wicket that looked a reasonable batting deck. A fair bit of side ways movement aided the bowlers, however SOS (Ben Rowles 39) & Rowdy (Daniel Rawson 29) got us away to a solid start @ 1/67. Marcus (11) & then SOS fell to leave the game evenly poised @ 3/89. (B) Mossy joined Hilly & they started to shake things up with some aggressive batting & at tea we had our noses well in front @ 3/156. Unfortunately not long after tea we lost 4 for 38 to be 7/214: (B) Mossy a hard hitting 44, Lewis (7), Bon (10) & Hilly for a stylish 54. Doz (21) & Dan (19no) put together a solid 36 run stand – 8/250. We were able to eek out another dozen runs before we were all out for 262, with Louis (3) & Jack (1). A pretty respectable total, however we considered we left 20/30 out there with 76 overs bowled & losing 7/86 after tea.
On Day 2, Josh Mac replaced Louis Cameron, who decided India & the World Cup was more appealing than Preston at Gillon Oval. Josh grabbed the first wicket after an aggressive start by their openers 1/44. We had a little bit of difficulty in slowing the run rate until Jack was introduced to the attack & in tandem with Dan we grabbed the initiative 1/88 became 5/117 as we went to tea. This quickly became 6/120 & the rest of the tail offered only a little resistance to be all out for 160 off 52 overs. Doz 1/47, Dan 2/29, Josh 1/26, Bon 2/15 & Jack 3/34 all very good contributions.
Also, our fielders in difficult conditions following the ground being top dressed during the week, did a really good job in supporting the bowlers.
Still things to work on, however 2 from 2 is a good place to start from, with a good vibe around the group. Looking forward to another challenge this week as we take on Yarraville away.
Seconds V Preston
The 2's were away at Preston City Oval against rivals Preston looking for their first points of the season after rain washed away hopes of a Rd 1 victory at Melton. We welcomed Vanshjot for his 2nd grade debut after consistent scores in 3s. Usual skipper Evan Smith was unavailable for this game so Mitch Horrocks stepped up for his captaincy debut, called correctly and we were batting first on what looked to be a good batting deck.
Dougie and Coops got us off to a solid start, with the running between the wickets between the two a highlight of their partnership with Coops looking to punish any bad balls early. Coops fell to their skipper for 38, putting on a handy opening stand of 57 with Dougie. Mitch fell the very next ball which brought Ben Bon to the crease. An elevation in the batting order signified more responsibility and, combined with Dougie, kept the scoring ticking over before Ben fell for 33.
Marcus and Pricey then put on 50 for the 6th wicket before Tom Mac joined Pricey for a 140-run 6th wicket partnership. OIlie was particularly aggressive, taking the attack to the bowlers with multiple mows over the leg side combined with deft paddles fine. Pricey brought up his first century for Brunswick to applause from the grandstand and was eventually out for 116 off 137. A very dominant knock and a great sign for the rest of the season. Tom was unbeaten on 62, his first half-century in seniors cricket. John nearly managed the elusive red ink but was bowled going for the runs late. A MAMMOTH 381 on the board.
We arrived in Preston on Day 2 very excited about the opportunity ahead of us. A strong headwind signalled pace from one end and spin from the other. Hammer picked up an early one and after a few feeble overs of pace into the wind, we brought on Rahul at one end and Marcus from the other. Marcus then completely dismantled the Preston batting lineup. Bowling for 16 overs straight, he showed incredible skill on a dull wicket to take 8 for 27, a great sign for the season to come. We bowled them out for 106 in 45 overs and decided to send them in again with the possibility of an outright. After 6 overs and no wickets, we called it and shook hands.
A great win to get the ball rolling for what should be a very successful season in 2s.
Thirds V Preston
Day one
A much anticipated Grand final rematch had the 3rd XI travel away to Preston. Eric won the toss and elected to bat on what would prove to be a difficult wicket for batting. Wickets fell regularly throughout the first half of the day with only Meady (28) and Giri (21) playing the conditions well. Akshay also fought well with a very patient 6 off 62 rocks opening the batting. In the end we got our way to 122 all out, with the best part of 25 overs to bowl for the rest of the day.
Hamish and Pottsy opened up with the new pill, with Hamish terrorising the Preston opening pair with some short of a length balls zipping past the batters noses and others going past their ankles. Hamish snagged an early wicket, and then Akshay pulled out his bag of tricks to sneak one under the toe of the bat and onto the wickets to make it effectively 3 down from 50 overnight, with their opener not returning the next week.
Day two
With Hamish getting promoted to the 2XI mid game, it was time for the triumphant return of Harry Travers who promptly went wicketless off 6 overs and did not return for a second spell. Gibbo opened up at the other end and got an LBW dismissing the young overnight batsmen. It was then the turn of Big Ed Sivak and Akshay Khabarwal
Ed bowled what might go down as the over of the season, reeling off big 4 LBW shouts in a row, the first 3 turned down which will surely have subbies looking into DRS technology for lower grade cricket, but the 4th must have been that bit better (it wasn’t) and the umpire had seen enough and gave it out. There was also a decent catch taken at second slip to get his first wicket.
With Akshay chipping away at the other end, Pottsy took a well-judged catch to dismiss the set batsmen, and with 2 wickets to get and 5 runs to defend, we were more than a chance - the game was on.
Unfortunately, we could quite get there in the end, the winning runs coming off the outside edge.
Preston eventually got a to a lead of 26, but Dec Smith said enough is enough, and got the final 2 wickets straight after tea.
26 overs of the most boring cricket to have ever been played ensued, and we finished 3/58, setting the game up for what would have been an intriguing 3rd day of cricket.
At the end of the day, 122 is nowhere near enough to win a game of cricket, although we gave it a fair shake.
Fourths V Preston
Day 1
Preston won the toss and elected to bat on a fairly good Holbrook wicket. Tom Burn sent the off stump flying first over, before their more experienced opening bat knuckled down batting for a very long time for 10 runs, in partnership with Preston's talented number 4 batter, Jashan Jaura.
Jaura played some lovely shots but lacked partners. He ended up with 97 of Preston's total score of 200 from 74 overs.
Farzad Mahmud bowled beautifully with 19.3 overs yielding 5-45. Pandya was consistent, 2-38 from 16. Ben Loughnane bowled better this week with 1-30 from 11. New player Henry 'Winston' Wilson kept nicely, taking a few good catches in borrowed keeping kit. We made good time during the Preston innings and had to negotiate about 10 overs overnight, with Lanco and AB doing that with relative ease, no wickets down.
Day 2
Fantastic batting conditions, we scored quickly and there were lots of nice partnerships. And we cruised passed the Preston total 4 wickets down. We continued to bat on - everyone in the top 7 making 20 to 50 runs, finishing up on 280 from 64 overs.
Good job, we are well set for Kew next week.
Saturday B
The Saturday Bs took on Youlden-Parkville at McAlister Oval, a short Cox-Martin bomb away from the Upfield line in Royal Park. We won the toss and batted on a firm pitch. The captain (35) and Sid Kumar (30) put on an opening stand of 62 - more than the entire team's first innings total from the previous week. Jordan Taylor looked the part in his second coming as a specialist batsman, top scoring with a stylish 45 off 39 balls. Baljeet Singh rotated the strike well for 37, and entertaining cameos from Gareth (31 off 22) and Haddie Butt (28* off 13) saw us through to 6/252.
Zaine Welsh and Akhil Guduri took the new ball and each hit the stumps early to have Y-P 2/14. Zaine had their young #4 in all sorts, playing and missing about 15 times. But the bat got his eye in and took full toll of some less well-directed bowling to advance briskly to 100, with the home team well placed at 3/160 with 17 overs to go. The game turned when Aiden Martin was belatedly introduced into the attack. Aiden promptly put a wrong'un through the centurion, and followed with another pole shortly after. Buoyed by this success, the captain decided it was time for leg spin from both ends, and chipped in with a couple of wickets of his own. Akhil took two more at the death, and the Wicks prevailed by 14 runs.
Saturday D V Williamstown
Williamstown won the toss and elected to bat first on a particularly windy Saturday afternoon at McDonald Reserve in Coburg. After an early wicket from opening bowler Evan Nolte (2/27 from 8), Williamstown began building a healthy 2nd wicket partnership. In the final over before drinks, Obi Hassan (2/40 from 5) got the breakthrough knocking over their number 3 bat for 41. Obi struck again in the 2nd over after drinks thanks to a great catch from Mark Anthony Legg, followed soon after by Yogi Sarang (2/40 from 7) dismissing the Williamstown captain for 52 with a catch to Evan. After another partnership began to build, Yogi and Evan combined again to take the 5th wicket. Some tidy bowling from Evan and Chris Owner (1/22 from 8) built some pressure, resulting in 2 more wickets between them. Blake Hughes (1/49 from 8) also contributed with a wicket off the last ball of the innings, with Williamstown 8/218 from their 40 overs.
Adrian Tanner (93) opened the batting for Brunswick and proved to be the rock of our innings as many around him made starts but weren't able to continue far into double digits. A very slow over rate frustrated the batters, however 47 extras kept us in the game as the wickets fell regularly. Adrian was dismissed with the Wicks 9 wickets down and 24 runs still required to chase down. Chris Owner combined with a fiery Evan Nolte who hit 2 sixes to bring the runs required down to 2. A wide brought the scores level and victory was just within reach, but the final wicket fell the very next ball resulting in a tie.
A thrilling match to be a part of, which highlighted just how important every extra run completed or saved really is in the game of cricket.
Sunday B
A win!
Brunswick 5/154 – M Singh 66
Moonee Valley 153 – C Rowe 3/42, R Sidhu 3/35, R Dadwell 2/11, B Gill 2/4
Sunday D V Flemington Colts
Flemington Colts were somewhat disorganised, as far as arrival time and player numbers etc, and, therefore, the umpire awarded Brunswick the toss and we chose to bat.
An excellent 91 (125) from Zach Chamberlain, 45 (39) from Eddy Mason, 26 (48) from Justin Kruze, 24 (14) from Dean Anderson and 22 (19) from Osgar Bryant paved the way for our 6/242 (45).
Eddy Mason was the pick of our bowlers, taking 5/9 (5) - very well supported by Archie Liddell 2/4 (1.2), Osgar Bryant 0/11 (5), Shaik Faisal 0/22 (5) and Lachie Anderson 0/23 (4).
Most of our wickets were either bowled or lbw this week, but there was great intensity, spirit and efficiency shown by all in the field.
Another great win, this week, over Flemington Colts 7/84 (21.2) and a terrific start to the season for Eddy Mason.
All Abilities
A cold and windy October morning down at Allard Park for the All Abilities' first game of the season. We had returning players Chris G, Dylan, Tomislav and new players Chris O, Stephen and a first game as skipper, Daniel.
Eltham were kind enough to lend us 2 fielders for our bowling innings, and having just 6 players meant that everyone was able to bat and bowl twice!
Daniel starred with both bat and ball and in a tense final over, Dylan and Stephen were able to secure a 6 run win by seeing off Eltham's last bowler.
All players supported each other well despite the weather with the support workers and family members cheering loudly.
Off to Moorabbin on 5th November.
