Brunswick Cricket Club match reports for 4-5 November

Six wins from 10 matches this weekend for the senior teams of Brunswick Cricket Club. Let's get to the reports...

A summary of results for Brunswick for the weekend of 4-5 November 2023. 6 wins from 10 matches, with the 2nds, 3rds, 4ths, Sat B, Sun D and All Abilities getting the chocolates.

Women's T20

The Brunswick Women's Team played their first match on turf for the season on Sunday against Youlden Parkville. Brunswick captain, Rosie Rodger, won the toss and elected to bowl first. This appeared to be a great move at first, with wickets falling steadily. Fielding was sharp and there was one assisted runout from Allegra Kline and Rosie Rodger. Youlden Parkvile were down to their last batter standing, but she proved incredibly difficult to dismiss; hitting 10 fours and one six before Alannah Sander was able to make the breakthrough in the final over, dismissing Maz Stonehouse (a former Brunswick player) for 92. Youlden Parkville finished their innings on 139. Wickets were shared amongst 5 bowlers; Allegra Kline, Alannah Sander, Poppy Dohrman with one each and Isabella Edwards and Emily White with two each. Due to lack of experience on turf, Brunswick struggled with the bat. Runs came slowly and unfortunately wickets fell steadily. Brunswick were similarly down to their last batter standing with Rosie Rodger seeing out the innings unbeaten on 33. It was a noble stand, but sadly not enough to seal a victory. Brunswick finished the day on 7/69.

Firsts V Yarraville

Losing the toss, we were asked to bowl first. Success was immediate 1/1, 2/4, 3/27, 4/45. We continued to hold them well in check & when drinks were taken 4/74 off 23 had us well placed. But the run rate accelerated rapidly & we were no able to break the partnership until the 40th over 5/176 then 6/179. The last 5 overs saw us unable to find answers to stop the flow of runs. Credit where credit is due as their Captain, Hahnel batted through the innings & held them together early then went through his gears to make 109 no. Doz 1/43, Dan 1/41, Josh Mac 3/39, J Moss 0/45, D Bon 1/55. 7/232 was still gettable on a good deck, quick outfield with short boundaries hard to protect.

The first few balls we started with a bang with SOS (8) looking ominous hammering a couple of boundaries, before he shelled a short ball, which he would usually send to the boundary, to mid wicket. Marcus (9) also looked in good touch & was pretty unlucky to be given out caught behind. Rowdy (2) joined Hilly & was solid before being adjudged LBW. B Moss joined Hilly as we looked to stabilise & build a platform. Hilly (43) again looked in pretty good touch before he also hit a half tracker to mid wicket. Lewis (4) departed quickly & we were 5/102 when drinks were taken. B Moss (23) again also looking in good touch was caught & deep mid on not long after drinks and at 6/118 we were now looking at being bowled out for an uncompetitive score. Doz & Bon took up the challenge & gave us a glimmer of hope before Doz (18) fell, a handy contribution in the circumstances. Dan (12) joined Bon and was looking to take the game deep before Dan fell. Bon was rolling along, trusting his instincts and taking it up to the attack before he fell ”rolling the dice” with 7 balls to go for a very well made 72. Josh Mac (9 ) joined by J Moss (2no) had the challenge of getting 14 off the last over, which unfortunately we were unable to achieve. All out for 219.

I believe we won about 60% of the game, so we clearly had our opportunities, just unable to win the moments that counted. To go down in a close one is disappointing. As the old saying goes “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” will see us focus clearly on making amends this week.

Thirds V Kew

The Threes were at the home of cricket this week against (one of many) archrivals Kew, looking to get back on track after a close loss the week prior to another arch nemesis Preston. Randy Dazzler was standing in for our intrepid captain Eric and started poorly by losing the toss. We were bowling first on what life member Stephen Mead called “the best Holbrook has ever looked”, which filled the bowlers with the utmost confidence.

With ever green Potter (0/22) and Birthday Boi Harry (who did return for a second spell this week) opening the bowling Kew got off to a strong start putting on 60 odd for the first wicket. The spinners came on and were quickly able to pin back the run rate and take a few top order wickets with Akshay (1/22) bowling especially well for a wicket not offering much for the bowlers. Gibo in helpful support finished with 2/35. Kew’s captain came out with ominous forewarning from captain courageous Randy “I’ve never seen this bloke not score 50+ against us”. He set about righting a waning ship with a fiftyish run stand for the fifth wicket and looking set for more runs before a fantastic effort in the field from Dec Smith with a direct hit sent the skip packing. With great death bowling from B-day Boi Harry (2/41), the Welsh Dragon Eddy Sivak (an unlucky 0/27) and a Dec Smith special of cleaning up the tail (4/51), Brunswick were able to peg back the lower order and restrict Kew to a reasonable 9/206 when 250+ was looking on the cards for most of the day.

The Brunswick innings got off to a flier with 14-year-old wiz kid Vanshot Sandhu looking in ominous touch before trying to hit his fourth boundary in a row and picking out the only fielder on the leg side to be out for 14 off just 6 balls. A mini collapse soon followed with Akshay falling for 23 (off 42) and our yearly Englishman getting another debatable umpiring decision for a second ball duck (and then promptly throwing his helmet into the dugout for the second straight week, welcome to subbies Giri!). Randy in a stroke of brilliance (in an otherwise statless in Seattle day) promoted B-day Boi Harry (92* off 102) to three, settling into a comfortable partnership with the bloke with the quickest bat speed at the club Sanj (68* off 81). After a nervy start, the boys put on a chanceless and majestic 150+ run stand to steer the team home with five overs and seven wickets in hand for a well-earned victory.

While Brunswick claimed the points, cricket emerged as the ultimate winner of the day. The Threes will aim to maintain their impressive performances when they face Bernards on the road next week. In further news, rumour has it that Randy is trying to gather sufficient support to stage a coup and assume control of the team for the rest of season.

Fourths V Kew

One day game for Round 3 against old rivals Kew, we lost the toss and were sent in under beautiful sunny skies at Kew.

AB and Lanco seemed to have put aside their differences after last weeks runout fiasco and started positively, putting on 25 (in mostly wides) against a fairly pedestrian opening bowling unit, before AB generously decided it was time to give some simple catching practice to second slip on 9, and Lanco chose to reward the first straight ball of the day by letting it castle him for the same score. This brought Brenton to the crease and he followed up a good 50 last week with another solid 31 this week, including lots of trademark walking down the pitch at the “fast” bowlers.

Farzad (31) and Brenton put together a good partnership before a few middle order collapses and two golden ducks saw us slip from 4/123 to all out for 142. In his first game for the 4ths, Adrian Tanner looked comfortable while wickets fell around him, compiling a composed 17. A big thanks to fill in batter W. Ides, offering up the 3rd highest score of the day with a solid 23.

Walking out to defend a modest total we were fired up early in the field - with the rousing Scottish war-cries of new recruit Sammy evoking images of the Stirling Bridge battlefield, rather than the lush surrounds of Kew’s South Oval. With Tom “Comfortably The Fastest Bowler In The League” Burn bowling down-wind you could say it was lucky the Kew openers weren’t wearing their white trousers. With another 20 or so play and misses off his opening 5 over spell, Tom had to count himself unlucky not to have picked up a wicket or 6.

After fighting hard to see off the opening bowlers of Tom and Luca, Kew’s opening batters scraped their way to 49 before the economical wizardry of Ben “Garry” Loughnane began to shut them down. Ben’s Nathan Lyon impression went to the next level in his 3rd over when he snared a one-handed return catch off his own bowling to break the shackles, almost dislocating his shoulder with his celebration. Four balls later he trapped their skipper in front to round out his spell of 2/9. The loss of these two wickets was the start of the real chaos, with Kew losing 8/18 over the course of the next 10 overs. Sammy bowled incredibly well in his first outing for the club, picking up 3/17 bowling into a stiff breeze, but unfortunately has to have points deducted for bowling a leg side wide on his hat trick ball. Party Pandya snared 2/7 from a very tight 4.1 overs, including a wicket with his first ball of the day.

The fire in the field was on full display with two run-outs. The first of which was a composed effort to see off one of Kew’s dangermen. The second (and as it was, final wicket of the game) however, saw wicketkeeper Henry accidentally kick over the stumps upon collecting the return throw, and stare at the remaining bail unsure of whether to knock it off, pick up the stump, or throw the ball to the bowler’s end where both batters were standing Henry offering him some choice words of advice for him to finally whip off the remaining bail, ending the game and giving us a 64 run win.and arguing about whose fault this was.

Saturday B V Royal Park Reds

The Saturday Bs headed to the ovals of Royal Park for the third consecutive week to take on the Royal Park Reds, a club formed out of Melbourne's communist and socialist circles of the 1970s.

Zaine Welsh (3/24) and Eddy Mason (3/11) cut a swathe through the Reds' top and middle order, leaving them 6/28 after 10. Eddy's celebration after his first wicket got everyone up and about, and he followed that up with a sensational diving caught and bowled for his third. The Reds captain - publican at the Vic Hotel - led a brief counter attack before his partner underestimated Gareth Cox-Martin, whose accurate throw found the skipper well short of his ground. There was a little more resistance from the lower order, but Senzy picked up an lbw after several appeals and Aiden Martin continued his good form, hitting the stumps twice with excellent wrong 'uns.

Set 118 to win, the Wicks made short work of the chase. The captain and Sid saw off the new ball before accelerating against the first and second change bowlers. After Sid was adjudged to have nicked off for 15, Baljeet Singh found the gaps with ease to keep the momentum going. The skipper chopped on for 58 with victory in sight, leaving Baljeet (22) and Zaine (8) to see us home in the 24th over.

Saturday D V South Yarra

South Yarra won the toss and elected to bat first at McDonald Reserve. Bryce Sarah (2/47) dismissed the South Yarra openers early in the innings. A solid partnership began to build for the 3rd wicket, but Obi Hassan (3/42) and Manuda Koku Hennedige (1/35) dismissed both set batsmen just before the drinks break. Yogi Sarang (2/57) chipped away at the middle order, and run outs to Evan Nolte and Bryce Sarah had South Yarra in trouble at 8/142, but the last 3 batsmen combined to set a decent score of 10/237 from their 45 overs.

There were a couple of good starts to Manuda (19), Evan Nolte (19), Blake Hughes (15), and Yogi (11*), but unfortunately Brunswick couldn't get a partnership going, ultimately getting bowled out for 120 after 29.5 overs, resulting in a 117 run loss.

Sunday D V Reds

We had the pleasure of hosting the Reds at Gillon Oval. Alec Kahn, the Reds’ captain and MCA Match Secretary, called heads correctly and decided to bat. I can’t quite fathom how the captain of a team based on communism can call for the Queen at the toss, but there you have it – we were bowling first.

Our bowling stocks were a little reduced from the previous week. Eddy was promoted to Saturday D after his 5/9 and 45 runs, one of our regular opening bowlers was unavailable, and our regular first change bowler withdrew due to illness. Robbo, Frank Foale, and Al Saunders (debut) came into the team to fill the breach, along with Waqas and Tom doubling up from Saturday. Quite a few changes!

The Reds openers made a steady start but eventually Osgar hit the pegs and the wickets started to fall. We didn’t manage to run through them but it was a disciplined bowling performance by all, with none of the Reds’ partnerships exceeding 40 and the run rate remaining under control. Osgar bowled his 9 overs straight, finishing with 1/13. Zach snared 3/33 (9). Archie bowled well over two spells (opening and late, 0/22 from 7 overs). Frank Foale picked up his first senior wicket (1/13, 4 overs). Robbo got to roll his arm over for the first time in years (0/15, 3 overs). The captain made the grave mistake of giving Dean a bowl and he proved difficult to drag by taking wickets (2/32, 5 overs). Al Saunders bowled well on his Brunswick debut and was unlucky not to get at least one LBW decision go his way (0/38, 8 overs). The Reds finished on 7/187 from their 45 overs – a good total but one we thought was gettable at only a touch over 4 an over.

The old Gillon Oval that we know and love really came to the fore during our batting innings with variable bounce, mostly on the low side. Mick and Zach got us off to a good start with an opening stand of 69 before Mick spooned a leading edge to mid wicket. Soon after, Justin got a nasty introduction to one of Gillon’s cracks, shouldering arms to a ball that jagged back and smashed the off peg. From there, Zach and Waqas combined for a 95-run partnership that pretty much sealed the win until Zach was judged LBW after another great contribution as an opener (60). Tom (5*) and Waqas (73* from 64 balls) then saw us home with more than 7 overs to spare.

This was our fourth win of the season from four matches. For a team that is mainly about participation, enjoying cricket, and getting the juniors a game on turf, the win column is outstanding with everyone contributing this week. Parkville District next!
