Brunswick Cricket Club Match Reports 17-25 Feb

With two-day games in the Subbies, we’ve got two weekends of Brunswick Cricket Club match reports for you. Let’s get to it, with a highlight being two 100s to report.

Jackson Cooper pushes the ball to cover to get to 100 while batting with a runner. And AB celebrating his 100 in Saturday D after a tight 2 gets him to triple figures

Womens T20 4/136 v Sydenham Hillside 3/126

The Brunswick women played Sydenham Hillside in Taylor’s Hill on Sunday. The day after the Ball might not have been the ideal day to take on the top-ranked team, with half the side having attended the club party. However, some brilliant batting from the Rodger sisters and sharp fielding from the Brunswick team led to a win in a very close game.

Indi Rodger was best on ground taking two wickets and then falling 3 runs short of a half century from 32 balls as she steered the side to 4/136 defeating Sydenham on 3/126

Firsts 238 v Williamstown 7/240

On winning the toss, Doz had no hesitation in batting in ideal conditions. A good start of 42 between SoS (8) & Coops was followed by another strong partnership with Mitch (26) & Coops taking the score to 2/104. Rowdy (7) fell just before tea, but 3 down at tea was a strong position. Coops went shortly after tea after being hampered by injury for most of his innings for a brilliant 113. We were moving along nicely & @ 4/200, in a very strong position to launch. Unfortunately with 3 run outs we lost 6/38 to be all out for 238, with our excellent early work in building a platform somewhat undone. J Moss (24), Lewis (40no), D Bon (0), Doz (8), Tang (3), Lou (4) & J Moss (0)

A defendable score looked even better when Doz struck in the first over. We progressed steadily when Lou broke through for 2/36 then Dan a short time later 3/74. We struck first ball after tea 4/109, when Doz got an edge to slip where Mossy held onto a low catch. We were able to apply pressure, however we were unable to make the most of several opportunities when they presented, with the score around 140/150. We eventually broke through 5/214 & we were hoping for a bit of panic 6/226. 7/229 gave us some hope, however not be as they passed us in the 78th over. Our bowling group led by Doz, Dan & Lou were tremendous & our total team effort cannot be questioned as we just kept on giving it our all. Unfortunately as has been the case on several occasions during the season we just did not make the most of our established positions or opportunities in winning the moments.

Sunday D 7/96 v Flemington Colts 7/96

It was another gorgeous day for cricket and this week we were up against the Flemington Colts, away at JJ Holland Oval, Kensington. The Colts won the toss and chose to bat.

Our bowlers and fielders got to work, and soon found that the pitch was playing quite low, and that, combined with solid bowling performances, saw the Colts struggle to be all out for 95 runs, off 31.2 overs. Our wicket takers were Brendan Powell 4/10 (4.2), Osgar Bryant 3/15 (9), Max Varley 2/14 (6) and Ruben Powell 1/6 (1). Tight fielding from all and great catching from Krishna Shreshna (3 with the gloves) and Zach Chamberlain and Osgar Bryant, each taking 1, had us off to the break, pleased with our efforts and ready to knock over our target of 96.

Incredibly, again this week, we found ourselves in dire straits at 6/47. Thankfully, one of our openers, Zach Chamberlain, was still at the crease and, through hard work and determination, managed to carry his bat and get us through to victory with 39 not (66), well supported by Brendan Powell 17 (36) and Max Varley 9 (15). The match ended up being a lot closer than we thought it was going to be - our middle order performances will need to greatly improve if we’re going to go all the way this season. Let’s keep working hard, really value our wickets, and keep striving to be at our absolute best for the fast-approaching finals.

Parkville District, this coming week, home at A G Gillion Oval - let’s lift and deliver a commanding win this week.

C’arn the Wicks.

9/187 v Parkville District 95

R Powell 43, D Anderson 48, L Anderson 38no

L Anderson 3/13, M Varley 3/15, O Bryant 3/25

This week we (2nd on the ladder) were up against Parkville District (4th) at the home of cricket - A G Gillon Oval, Brunswick.

Parkville D lost the toss and we chose to bat.

I must say, we had a very ordinary start with the bat, finding ourselves 3/13, just into our 7th over. Pleasingly, the team was able to get back on track through some excellent batting from Dean Anderson 48 (59), Ruben Powell 43 (53) (with a terrific 92 run partnership) and Lachlan Anderson 38 not (55) (making a very valuable, last wicket stand, 32 run partnership, with Krishna Shrestha), and we were able to achieve a very solid 9/187, from our 45 overs.

Our bowlers and fielders then got to work, and did a wonderful job, bundling Parkville D out for 95 in their 28th over. Super tight bowling from Romi Rahman 0/8 (5) and Osgar Bryant set the scene early, built heaps of pressure and aided our wicket takers Osgar Bryant 3/25 (7), Max Varley 3/27 (7), Lachlan Anderson 3/13 (4.1) and Ben Pickering 1/15 (2). Terrific catching from Al Saunders (mid wicket) and Osgar Bryant (gully), both showing very safe hands in the field, each taking 1.

Many thanks to Ruben Powell for doubling up from the Saturday B team - greatly appreciated Ruben.

Well done team, a great win - we fought back with the bat, bowled really well and took our chances in the field - excellent work.

We host Turf Strokers this coming week, home at the G - let's notch up another win in the last round before the finals.

C’arn the Wicks!
