Here are the Brunswick Cricket Club match reports for last weekend - with some very good team and individual performances (plus some disappointments).
Women’s T20 1/134 v Moonee Valley 1/106
Brunswick Women’s team faced another early start due to hot weather. They were up against Moonee Valley at Allard Park - the second time facing this team for the season. In their first match up Brunswick won by 13 runs and in this outing, the margin was extended to 28 runs with Brunswick 1/134 defeating Moonee Valley 1/106.
Moonee Valley won the toss and sent Brunswick into bat first. Indi Rodger and Rosie Rodger again opened the batting. The pair started more slowly than usual and after scoring 5 runs from 11 balls faced, in an uncharacteristic moment of frustration, Rosie was dismissed for the first time this season. Both Isabella Edwards and Poppy Dohrmann took to the bowlers, with Bella retiring on 30 from 18 deliveries and Poppy retiring on 28 from 17.
Brunswick bowled economically and fielded well to keep Moonee Valley’s scoring to a minimum. Alannah Sander was back in the team this week, taking the only wicket of the innings and producing the best bowling figures of 1/9 from 4 overs.
Firsts 170 v Hoppers Crossing 5/174
Winning the toss, we started badly & slumped to 4/44 before B Moss & MJ steadied the ship until Mossy fell (31) with the score 5/115. MJ fell with the score 6/136 for a well-made 42, in the process tweaking a quad & unable to bowl. Lew B (36) & Tang (14) rallied late & were able to take us to a sub par score of 170.
Doz got the initial break & followed up with another straight away 2/38. We were unable to make any further inroads as a strong partnership developed. J Moss had Lambert caught in the deep, and 3/138 soon became 4/139 with a glimmer of hope. However, it was not be as we were passed 5 down with almost 7 overs to spare.
Doz 3/41, J Moss 1/34, Louie 1/33, Tang 0/36, B Moss 0/20 & Marcus S 0/9
Firsts 4/202 v Strathmore 116
In a must win game, Doz again won the toss & had no hesitation in batting. It was going to be tough batting on a wicket already showing plenty of wear. Coops & SoS made the most of batting against the new ball, Coops (40) was first to go 1/94. Marcus S (21) joined SoS & the grind through the middle overs continued to 2/133, when Marcus S fell. B Moss (13) fell as we tried to increase the run rate 3/158. SoS was joined by Rowdy & they pushed the score to 4/190 before SoS (77) fell late with the score on 190. Lew B added a quick 8no & Rowdy 19no, when our innings closed.
We were able to get an early break at 1/3 before they steadied with a 77 run partnership to reach 2/80 before Doz got the breakthrough. From there it was a bit of a “ procession “to be all out 116, with all bowlers getting amongst the action. Doz was almost unplayable in the conditions 6.1overs, 3 maidens, 3/7, well supported by, D Bon 4/37, J Moss 1/31, Louie 1/27, Tang 0/13

It was another perfect (albeit a touch warm) day for cricket (and what fine day isn’t, I hear you say) and we were up against another contender for the chocolates, the Reds, away at Walker East Oval, Parkville.
Reds won the toss and chose to bat.
Our bowlers and fielders got to work, and the Reds, for the most part, struggled to their total of 159 runs from their 45 overs, at 8 wickets down. Solid bowling performances from Brendan Powell 3/14 (8), Alastair Saunders 2/24 (9), Max Varley 1/24 (9) and Ben Pickering 1/33 (6) (having gone for a few in his sixth over, unfortunately) and superb catching from Max Varley, Alastair Saunders, Tom Varley (with the gloves) and Ben Pickering, each taking 1 and a slick runout from Mick McCarthy and Tom Varley, allowed us to head in to the half-time break, pleased with our work and confident that we could reach our target of 160.
Unfortunately, however, we soon found ourselves struggling at 3/35. Thankfully, our hopes lifted again through some solid partnerships involving Ruben Powell 32 (35), Dean Anderson 32 (41) and Mick McCarthy 18 (44), but it wasn’t enough, and we fell agonisingly short of our target by 4 runs - all out for 156. It was another very close loss to the Reds, having fallen just short of our target just before Christmas.
I’m confident, however, that with our best team on the park we can knock them over, which is likely to be in the finals - let’s work hard and make that a reality.
Many thanks to Mark Anthony Legg and Kiran Long for doubling up from the Saturday D team - great stuff guys.
Flemington Colts, this coming week, away at JJ Holland Park, Kensington - let’s knock them over again on our quest for the finals.
C’arn the Wicks.
