Firsts 5/213 V Kew 106

Welcoming Cob (Chris Thewlis ) for his debut & losing the toss we were invited to bat on a wicket that looked dry & likely to get more difficult to bat on as the day progressed. We lost Cob (4) on one that held up & SoS (14) getting a good one inside the first 10 @ 2/36. Hilly (85 off 89) taking his time to play some balls to get in, along with Coops (84 off 125), were brave & put the bowlers on the back foot. Coops pushing through the pain barrier physically & mentally attacked at will, whilst Hilly with a mixture of power & precision showed his absolute class putting on 138 for the 3rd wicket. Mossy (8), Stutts (7no) & Nico (1no) aided in us posting a very solid 5/213

Our bowlers then went about their work, supported by some excellent fielding, building pressure in the ring. 1/13 before a partnership of 35. At 2/48 game on, however our pressure told – tight overs no easy runs in the ring – 5/68 & the game had swung our way. 6/93 then 7/105 all out 106 in 30.2 overs.

Lou & Dan’s spells up front set the tone, supported by Faruk 2/19 & Hilly 1/14 (taking himself off after 3 overs & protecting his average). Mossy 0/10 with Dan 3/14 & Ameya 4/21 excellent & doing the damage – a really strong performance by our bowling group, extremely well supported by our fielding again as a group.

A big thanks to Geoff Turner who has scored for the past couple of games & also all who came along to support. This week away to St Bernards who finished top of the table last season so another challenge presents.

Seconds 8/163 v Kew 8/166

On the same deck as the firsts played on the day before, we won the toss & batted. Evan (19) & John (66) got us away to a strong start @ 1/43. Shloak (3) 2/57 with John joined by Ollie (26) built a solid partnership to hold us in good stead 3/114. Pat (18), Giri (2), Thomas (10no), Jmac (3) & Zaine (2no), found  the mid/late overs challenging on a deck that was hard to get in on, as proved on the Saturday. A competitive score of 8/163, with anything over the 160 mark being a handful.

Kew got away to a quickish start 1/26 before Gibbo & Ollie put the breaks on during the middle part of the innings. The pressure built up & bowling in partnerships came with rewards 2/39, 3/66, 4/74, 5/81. A partnership of 72 then ensued as we searched for the breakthrough, however we were a little inconsistent with our lengths & lines, bowling enough 4 balls for Kew to score.  6/150 then 8/161 saw us take the game late till the final over. Hallys 1/26, Potts 1/21, Jmac 1/29, Zaine 1/8, Shloak 1/23 & Evan 0/13, Gibbo 0/23 off 9, with a brilliant run out & Ollie 1/19 off 9, doing a sensational job.

The fight & desire was excellent with us never giving up on the contest. A few tweaks & a number of learnings will hold us in good stead over the coming weeks.

Thirds 119 V Preston 9/122

Brunswick’s batting lineup struggled to gain traction, with quick wickets hampering their momentum. Craig Rowe's solid 26 and Gareth Cox-Martin’s 31 provided some stability, while Declan Smith chipped in with a gritty 16. Despite their efforts, Brunswick couldn’t put together partnerships, ending with a modest total as Thomas Burn remained not out on 7*.

In defense, Brunswick’s bowlers showed resilience. Craig Rowe led with an impressive 3 for 20 off 7 overs, while Thomas Burn and Haider Butt bowled economically, taking 2 for 25 and 1 for 24 respectively. Though Brunswick fielded tightly and executed a crucial run-out by Robert Anderson and Burn, the opposition kept little partnerships going to maintain their slight edge in momentum. Despite falling short, Brunswick’s determined effort made it a close and competitive match.

Fourths 242 V Preston 5/246

Really good game of cricket down at Holbrook, with 490 runs being scored in the two 40 over innings.

Preston won the toss and sent Brunswick in.  Preston’s opening bowlers were wayward but bowled some good balls and had Brunswick on the ropes early at 3-53.  Bman and Parth then came together, putting on 96 runs for the 4th wicket.

Player of the match, Party Pandya, batted beautifully with his new Badger bat - finishing up with 91 off only 66 balls including 4 sixes and 10 boundaries.  Bman scratched around for a bit longer departing with the score on 238, all out for a competitive 242.  Preston's 6th bowler ended up with 5-32, bowling well full and straight.

Preston certainly started their chase with intent, Romi getting whacked over the top for 6 second ball of the innings.  The runs continued to flow, with Brunswick struggling to contain some very positive batting.  The first breakthrough came at 87 runs via a lucky runout, with a deflection off Romi's bowling follow through onto the non-strikers end stumps. Brunswick wrestled it back a bit from there, but Preston's in batsman didn't throw it away working the singles with the occasional boundary.

Pandya and Dadwal bowled well, 16 yo debutant Lachie Anderson broke through for a few middle order wickets but was then unfortunately unable to bowl at the death with the 6 over restriction for 16 year olds.  Their experienced batter, Wilkes, who won the 3rds medal in Brunswick's GF victory a few years ago, proceeded to whack Bman over the short boundary 3 times and the game was lost

Saturday D 92 V Parkville District 0/97

Parkville District won the toss and elected to bowl first on a tricky pitch at H. G. Smith Oval in Parkville.

Despite a few starts, Brunswick's innings never really got going as we struggled our way to a total score of 92 runs from 36 overs. Waqas Jatois (34), Hector Harley (15), and Archie Lidell (10) were the stand out performances with the bat against a very strong bowling line-up and tight field where runs were hard to come by.

Despite our best efforts with the ball, Parkville District's openers were able to reach the modest target unbeaten in just 19 overs, not giving a single chance to any fielders keen to make the chase as difficult as possible.

Saturday C 9/122 v Power House 267
